It really makes sense

My wife and I had taken out travel insurance with Insure & Go, and thank God we did!

Day one of our holiday in Vienna, we headed, by foot, to our walking tour of the city.

We had no sooner passed a crosswalk when Caroline said the Green Man had started to flash. I ran across but twisted on my ankle on my right foot. I was sure I heard a crack, to find out later that I had fractured my fifth metatarsal bone. Initially it began to swell and we agreed that Caroline go ahead on the walking tour and that I return to the hotel and pack it in ice.

We phoned the travel insurance company who advised us to go to the local University Hospital, where, through x-rays, confirmed the fracture, also giving us injections to stop a DVT happening.

Because we were British they required 400 euros before they would even look at my foot injury. They fitted a plaster (much to the joy and amusement of my grandchildren, who signed it with their felt tips?).

The plaster meant I had to rest all my weight on my left foot, plus rely on the crutches! Such an ordeal. Needless to say the holiday was scuppered, much to the disappointment of my wife. I owe her big time.

That's when the insurance company came into its own. We hired a wheelchair which meant we at least could go to the famous Lipizzaner dancing white stallions and hear an ensemble of Mozarts and Strauss's music.

Most of our time was consumed with speaking to the travel insurance company who eventually did come up trump for looking after us.

They organised special assistance with the airline, pre boarding me on our return home flight, with the help of specialist ground staff. They also had us go to the special airway lounge too, which was a nice touch. They were able to organise one extra seat giving me some extra space to rest my leg. The air hostess also asked the person beside me to move and I was able to stretch my legs across the three seats (photo attached).

They even laid on a taxi to take me from the airport directly to my home. So far it's been a pamper zone thanks to the travel insurance company.

Thankfully the minor injuries took x-rays again today and gave me a support boot. This means that I don't have to hop any more.

My bottom line encouragement is don't travel without travel insurance. I am proof that it really makes sense.
