Overcoming the Achilles Heel of Fear - Part #1

According to a legend from Greek mythology, there was a baby born half-God and half-man called Achilles.

When Achilles was an infant his mother had dipped the baby Achilles into the river Styx, holding onto him by his heel. It was from this baptism that Achilles became invulnerable, in every part of his body where the waters had touched him.

So although he appeared invulnerable everywhere, there was one place the waters did not reach. This was the areas of his heel, as this has been covered by his mother’s thumb and forefinger.

Later in his life, Helen, the wife of the Greek King, was taken by the Trojan Prince Paris, the Greeks went to war to get her, and Achilles was involved at the forefront of the battle.

However, the Greek god Apollo knew Achilles weakness. So when Paris of Troy shot an arrow at Achilles, Apollo guided it so that it struck Achilles on the heel. Achilles eventually died from the wound.

Today the phrase ' your Achilles Heel', is used, to describe a point of weakness or area of vulnerability, that could lead to someone’s downfall.

Over the next few days, I would like to address the subject entitled Overcoming your Achilles heel of fear.

As a theologian, I am aware that the Bible offers 365 "fear nots," one for literally every day of the year.

The good Lord knows well everyone at times has a propensity to be anxious, to worry and to fear.

The NHS have even given 10 Tips to protect our mental health during these unprecedented times of Covid19. They are unpacked in this hyperlink if you are interested:

1.stay connected with people

2.talk about your worries

3.support and help other people

4.feel prepared

5.look after your body

6.stick to the facts

7.stay on top of difficult feelings

8.do things you enjoy

9.focus on the present

10.look after your sleep

So that is enough for today.

"An anxious heart weighs a man down"(PROVERBS 12:25)

Please be aware that the enemy of your soul has a strategy as he is

  • an accuser,
  • a liar, and
  • a blood of the lamb rejector.
"Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1 verse 9).

See you tomorrow for another exciting instalment of Overcoming your Achilles heel of fear.

God bless.
