December 3rd - John's Prologue
Passages:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He
was with God in the beginning…14 The Word became flesh and
made his dwelling (tabernacled) among us. We have seen his glory, the
glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and
truth (John 1:1,14)
The Message says 14 The Word became flesh
and blood and moved into the neighbourhood.
Therefore,
the Lord himself will give you a sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth
to a son, and will call him Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14)
‘The virgin
will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel’
(which means ‘God with us’) (Matt 1:23)
Ponder:
The prologue that launches John’s Gospel is about
how God Himself entered humanity (John 1:1-18). It is the most complete study
of Jesus’ pre-existence in the New Testament. This is our starting point for
Advent.
·
John was a valued eyewitness to the life of Jesus
(John 19:35; 1 John 1:1-3).
·
Along with Peter and James, he was within the
disciple’s inner circle.
·
John’s Gospel is known as “the spiritual Gospel.”
·
John provided the portrait of a Jesus who directly
revealed the Father.
·
John is known as Jesus’ beloved disciple”
(NIV, the disciple whom Jesus loved 13:23; 19:26; 20:2;
21:7,20).
Prayer:
Thank you, Lord that in Jesus we enjoy revelation –
the self-disclosure of the glory of God as He appeared in human flesh.
14 The Word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood.
Help
me to remember your earthly life. Thank you that you came to live, die and rise
again, redeeming mankind from a lost eternity. I worship you my Risen Lord. Amen.
